Because of the ability of cockroaches to survive and adapt our cockroach control services are focused on eliminating the sources of food, water, and shelter that fuel growing cockroach populations.

If you live in Des Moines or the central Iowa area you can call us to get a free estimate and detailed plan to eliminate the cockroach infestation.

Downs Pest Control Cockroach Control Methods for Des Moines

Our cockroach plans consist of 3 phases: Inspection and Identification, Elimination of Food, Water, and Harborage, Applications of Products and Monitoring.

Phase 1 and 2: Inspection and Identification of Cockroach Species & Elimination of Food, Water, and Harborage

The first two phases of our cockroach plans are the most important. Identifying the species of cockroach involved is key to understanding how the cockroaches in your home live and how to eliminate the cockroach infestation. Cockroaches crawl into the smallest spaces and hide themselves. Often cockroaches are very good at hiding and do not come out in daylight. Proper cockroach treatment depends on a thorough inspection and accurate identification. The predominate cockroach species found in Des Moines and in Central Iowa is the German cockroach. To learn more about the German cockroach please visit our Des Moines and Iowa pest information page at

Once it is known where the cockroaches are hiding and feeding they can be treated. Eliminating food, water, and harborage is key to the elimination of cockroaches. If these three things are not removed from the cockroach's enviornment the cockroach population will continue to grow to the level that the available water, food, and shelter will support.

Phase 3: Application of Cockroach Baits and Dusts

The only way to eliminate a cockroach infestation is to use an integrated approach to cockroach management. There must be multiple methods taken and the home owner must work with our technicians to eliminate the roach infestation. Phases 1 and 2 deal with identification and elimination of cockroach enviornment, phase 3 includes placements of baits, insect growth regulators, and insecticides in proper locations and proper amounts to eliminate cockroach populations.

Organic and All-Natural Cockroach Treatments

An effective product that we use at Downs Pest Control to control cockroaches is Diatomaceous Earth. Diatomaceous Earth sticks to the cockroaches bodies because Diatomaceous Earth is charged positively and cockroaches are charged negative. The Diatomaceous Earth dries out the cockroaches and causes them to die which in turn helps to control cockroach populations. Below is a video of a cockroach cleaning off the Diatomaceous Earth that has stuck to its body.

Cockroach Treatment FAQ

Is it possible to get rid of cockroaches?

Yes it is possible. It is not easy though. Cockroaches have been around for millions of years and are extremely resilient. The most important thing that can be done to get rid of cockroaches is to limit the food, water and shelter that is available. Our trained technicians will recognize what steps can be taken to limit these. Without limiting food, water and shelter it can be extremely difficult to elminate cockroaches.

Should I do anything before the first cockroach treatment Downs Pest Control does at my house?

That depends. Often our technicians first visit out to your home will be an inspection. After the inspection our techncian will create a detailed action plan to eliminate the roaches. After the initial visit the technician will inform you about what you need to do before each cockroach visit.
