Termite Treatment FAQ

 About Termites

Throughout the world, there are only a few pests that cause as much personal damage as termites cause. Termites can cause up to $5 billion dollars to US homeowners per year in damage repair. It is often cheaper to prevent termites than to repair the damage that termites can cause to homes.
In Iowa the most common type of termite is the Eastern Subterranean Termites. These termites are widely spread throughout the eastern half of the United States, and have been found in as far west as Utah.

Diet

Termites eat cellulose which is a very rich, high-energy source (can be seen through what happens when wood is burned) but it is very difficult to digest. Items termites often eat include: paper, wood structures, cotton, and books.

Colony

Termites are social insects, like bees and ants, so each termite has a job to do. A mature colony can reach numbers of up to 10 million workers. Although on average, the colony only reaches up to a million. The colony is divided up into a caste system. A caste system is an elaborate and complex social system that combines elements of occupation, endogamy, culture, social class, tribal affiliation and political power. There is a queen and king, workers, soldiers and reproductive adults.

The queen is an egg-laying behemoth; her egg pouch is usually 5 to 10 times the size of her body. Every day she can lay more than 2,000 eggs. Throughout her lifetime, usually 20-30 years, she can lay over 2 billion eggs.

Workers are the smallest termites in the colony, but have the greatest numbers. The workers have many responsibilities. Some may include: building the colony, leaving the colony to get food, taking care of the eggs and young, and protecting the colony. The workers are wingless, blind, and grow to about 1/8 inch long and are a whitish-gray color.

The soldiers are the main defense of a colony. They are also wingless, but about twice the size of a worker. Soldiers have very large and strong mandibles (jaws). The mandibles are used to crush enemy insects that enter the colony; usually ants are the termite’s main enemy. The soldier caste makes up only 2% of the colony.

The reproductive caste is made up of male and females that are able to reproduce. They are the only adults to have wings, with two pairs of wings. The reproductive adults usually fly away in swarms and mate. Once they mate and find a place with good food and water, they lose their wings and start a colony. The reproductive caste is made up of future kings and queens of new colonies. There are also some females that help lay eggs for the queen in the colony, and she takes over in case the queen dies.
