About Millipedes

Millipedes and centipedes are often confused. The main thing to remember about millipedes is that they have more legs than centipedes. Millipedes have two pairs of legs on each segment, while a centipede only has one pair of legs per segment. Most species of millipedes in Iowa only have between 36 to 300 legs, below the common perception of having a thousand legs. Another way to tell the difference between centipedes and millipedes is by the way they move. Millipedes tend to move more slow and lackadaisical, while centipedes move more quickly.

Millipedes typically live outdoors in damp areas. They live in dark areas such us under leaves, dead plant debris, or in cracks and crevices. They eat damp decaying organic material. They are beneficial to the environment. They are often found in the basement or garage.

They often are accidental invaders, accidentally entering the home, often crawling in through little cracks or crevices and becoming trapped indoors. They cannot bite, sting or cause harm to your home. Once inside, millipedes cannot reproduce and usually die quickly because of lack of moister.

Managing Millipedes

If you ever find a millipede indoors, capture it and release it back into the wild. If you keep finding millipedes indoors, that must mean that there is a good source of moisture and decaying matter for the millipedes to survive. Finding this source and removing it will stop the infestation of millipedes.
