About Fleas

Fleas are found in Des Moines, Iowa. Fleas are nasty and can be difficult to control. Fleas make your dog or cat uncomfortable. Fleas are tough but they can be killed and controlled. What makes getting rid of fleas so difficult is their life-cycle and that they do not spend most of their time on your pets. So finding them and removing them can be a complicated task.

Flea Life Cycle

The life cycle from egg to adult flea can vary from 2 weeks to 8 months, depending on species, heat, or other outside factors. Fleas go through four stages in their life: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The flea eggs are tiny, and can hatch anywhere from a couple of days to two weeks. Once they hatch, they are in the larva stage. The larva stage can vary from weeks to months. This is when the protective cocoon forms and the larva stage becomes the pupa stage. As stated before, the pupa stage can last for up to a year. Once the flea emerges from the cocoon, it needs to eat. Fleas primary food source is fresh blood from its host.

Location of Fleas

The eggs of fleas can be found anywhere where the animal walks or sleeps. Flea eggs look like little white eggs, they are usually found where the pet sleeps. Outdoors, flea eggs can be found in gravel areas, or where your pet has created a resting area. Adult fleas will be found near the host. Since adults need freshhttp://downspestcontrol.blogspot.com/ blood to survive they are usually not too far away from your pet.

Flea Treatment

There are three different areas of flea treatment: outdoor, indoor, and on-the-host treatments. Downs Pest Control can and will get rid of the fleas in and out of your house. The last flea treatment, on-the-host, should be done by a certified veterinarian. You can also buy some over the counter products to get rid of fleas on your pet, but be warned most of the products do not get rid of all the fleas and eggs. A certified veterinarian will know exactly what steps to take.

In order to fight the fleas you must have an approach that fights fleas on the pets, in your home, and in your yard. The approach must be continuous because one treatment often will not eliminate the fleas. This is because of the different life cycles of the fleas. The flea eggs may remain after treatments and fleas can remain in the pupa stage in a protective cocoon for as long as year waiting for the right conditions to emerge.

This makes it very difficult to treat fleas with one approach. Downs Pest Control can take care of the house and the yard; your vet must take care of your pet. We can inspect the home and determine the best treatment method to rid your home of those annoying fleas. When the treatments are thorough and continuous the fleas do not stand a chance.
