Bedbugs Return

Bedbugs are back. These little critters were eliminated over 50 years ago thanks to long lasting and strong insecticides. Unfortunately these insecticides where not only harmful to bedbugs they were also harmful to other wildlife and humans so the US Government banned the use these insecticides. Today, due to world travel, these little blood sucking critters are finding their ways back into apartments, hotels, homes, and businesses. Each day the problem they cause is growing at an unbelievable rate.

These parasites are nasty and very difficult to control. If you have them the best thing you can do is call a professional to help you eradicate this problem from your home. Bedbugs are a growing problem in Des Moines and in the US. The only way we can eliminate this problem is by acting fast. Do not put off the treatment call us today for a free quote and consultation.

Most often these parasites travel into your home as stowaways. They either ride in with guests or hitch a ride with you after you have stayed in a hotel or at a friend's. These bugs cannot travel far from hosts and survive which means you do not have to worry about them coming into your home from the outside world, but if you live in an apartment, condo, or duplex they can and do travel over from an adjacent apartments.

What makes theses little parasites so difficult to get rid of is their ability to hide. They crawl into the smallest little spaces and hide themselves. They can be extremely difficult to find and proper treatment depends on a thorough inspection and accurate identification. Once it is known where the critters are hiding they can be treated.

Bedbugs are hard to detect. One reason is that they are tiny, and when they hide, they hide in small cracks and crevices that aren’t easily seen with the naked eye. Another reason is that they are nocturnal, they usually don’t come out of the crevices until night time. So detecting them in the daytime is difficult. These two things make it hard to detect bedbugs without some professional help. The signs of bedbugs are skin irritation, fecal spots, blood stains, and the molts of the bedbugs. They also have a smell of almonds that trained dogs can easily detect. Downs Pest Control trained technicians will find out if you have bedbugs, and they will tell you if it is more cost effective just to throw it out and buy a new mattress or furniture item.

If you ever see a discarded mattress, sofa, or furniture pieces, DO NOT pick them up or even touch them. The reason they are discarded could be because of an infestation. Also with the warm, humid summer days Des Moines has, a discarded mattress can be a breeding ground for bed bugs, so there is no reason to take a risk of letting bedbugs into your home.

Be careful when you buy used furniture, the household cleaning products are not strong enough to kill all the bedbugs or other unwanted things on them. Bedbugs are difficult to see, so proper inspection may be needed.

There’s not much else you can do to prevent bringing bed bugs into your home. The problem with bedbugs is that they are so tiny you can’t see them very easily. So when you visit a friend house or a hotel, you won’t know you may be carrying them and inadvertently bring them into your home.

Below is an excellent video that was put together by hte University of Florida that shows what bedbugs look like and where they live. Pleas watch it to learn more.
